REDD and WCR Activities

We protect biodiversity and the balance of the ecosystem

Within the activities of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation and Wetland Conservation, we carry out concrete actions for monitoring and controlling biodiversity and climate.

Among these, we prioritize three umbrella species (neotropical otter, Caribbean manatee, and American crocodile) as indicators of the conservation of fauna associated with mangroves. Communities actively participate in monitoring processes alongside CVS and Fundación Omacha; thanks to this joint work, we have achieved significant results.

The rehabilitation of channels is another of our tasks to recover the ecological dynamics of mangroves in areas degraded by natural or anthropogenic agents as a climate change adaptation measure. These actions are carried out with the participation of local communities through cleaning, canal maintenance, and propagation of plant material.

With the support of CVS and Invemar, we also conduct annual monitoring of mangrove structure and composition. Additionally, we track coastal erosion, water quality, and carbon capture, in accordance with the program’s certification standards.

Here are some of our results during the II Monitoring Report (2019–2023):

Biodiversity

•Annual records of surface water quality monitoring: View more

• Marine erosion.

Flora

• 7.671 hectares of mangrove under a protected area management plan

• 1.106 hectares of forest loss avoided

• 34.596 meters of channels hydrologically rehabilitated

• +193.000 seedlings produced in community nurseries and planted in priority restoration areas

Fauna

• 82 manatee records

• 104 otter records

• 1.424 American crocodiles recorded

Climate

  • Net reduction of 73,434 tons of CO₂e between 2015 and 2018
  • Reduction of 176,486 tons of CO₂e during the program implementation (2015–2023)
